As executive director of a nonprofit organization serving those in need, particularly in the area of health, Garcia is intimately familiar with these determinants.
The Centers of Disease of Control and Prevention (CDC) says the social determinants of health are conditions in the places where people live, learn, work, and play that affect a wide range of health and quality-of-life risks and outcomes. The World Health Organization, meanwhile, defines 10 social determinants of health, which tend to disproportionately affect people of color and poverty:
