Listen in below as Johnny discusses how and why the stress and isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic are presenting enormous challenges for those in addiction recovery.

As president of the Aquila Recovery Clinic, an outpatient clinic bridging the gap between primary and addiction healthcare, Johnny is familiar with this issue firsthand and speaks to solutions to reach more people with services during the pandemic and beyond.


Johnny is also founder and past president of the DC Recovery Community Alliance, a local recovery advocacy organization in the nation's capital, as well as former president and CEO of the Johnson Institute and director of operations for the District of Columbia Mental Health System.


With more than 60 years of experience in journalism, business, government, political consulting, and advocacy, he brings 30 years of activism and leadership as a leading national advocate for addiction recovery issues, including serving eight years on the DC Democratic Committee, chairing the Mayor's Advisory Council on Alcoholism, serving as director of communications under Mayor Marion Barry, and working on numerous political campaigns, beginning with the 1970 Walter Fauntroy for Congress campaign.


His own addiction recovery story has been featured in Gary Stromberg's book "Second Chances: Top Executives Share Their Stories of Addiction & Recovery" and by the Washington Post. Johnny is also a lecturer and the author of a recovery tool book: "Say the Second Thing That Comes Into Your Mind: The Work and Joy of Recovery." Visit for more information.
